About Dream consultancy

Official comprehensive data for a full year is typically released later by agencies like the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). However, recent information from 2025 and previous years shows:

Growing Problem: Suicides linked to financial stress increased consistently from 4,970 cases in 2018 to 7,034 in 2022, a trend projected to continue through 2024 and 2025.

Farmer Suicides: The agricultural sector is particularly vulnerable. In 2023, 10,786 farmers and agricultural laborers died by suicide due to issues like debt, crop failures, and fluctuating prices. In early 2025, individual tragedies linked to debt and government inaction were still being reported in states like Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Microfinance Harassment: In March 2025, the Karnataka Home Minister reported 15 suicides linked to harassment by microfinance institutions (MFIs) within the year, highlighting predatory lending as a cause.

Urban Distress: Financial hardship is a top risk factor in cities and towns. A 2025 study in Surat found 19% of suicides were due to financial issues, with 90% of those victims having incurred debt. In Delhi, over half of suicide victims in 2023 earned less than 1 lakh annually, showing a strong link between low income and suicide risk.

Underlying Reasons

The causes are complex and interwoven, but common factors include:

Heavy Debt Burden: Unpaid loans, especially from high-interest private moneylenders or unregulated digital loan apps, create immense pressure.

Economic Instability: Factors like job loss, low income, and business failures are key drivers.

Lack of Support Systems: Urbanization and nuclear families mean individuals often face financial burdens alone, without a strong community or family safety net.

Stigma: The social stigma around financial failure often prevents people from seeking help or discussing their problems.
